A Latin maxim says: per angusta ad Augusta – through difficulties to honours. Such an expression aptly describes the life’s voyage of the enigma called Chuks, who, against enormous challenges posed by disability keeps on painting his many laurels with beautiful, alluring colours. A man of many firsts, he stands tall as a never-to-dry stream of inspiration for his generation.
Exactly on this day – October 1, 2007, Chuks woke up only to discover that his treasured instrument of visual connections had taken a French leave of him. He had lost his sight.
Eleven years on, we celebrate the great man in him; we celebrate a gentleman of scrupulous standing, whose doggedness yield not to what many see as end of the road. Indeed he lost sight, but not his vision.
Ask me of a man with the most lofty dreams and I will show you Chuks. Even though he was arrested by blindness in the second stanza of his primary education, he traversed all the associated travails, and came out with one of the best results among his mates. Poised to achieve greater feats, he took a quantum leap to one of the nation’s best secondary schools – Federal Government College, Ijanikin, Lagos State, Nigeria, where, even as a visually impaired person, he made a grade-A result in the WASSCE. He was simply outstanding!
Upon graduation, Chuks was offered admission to study Law in the prestigious University of Lagos. This soon-to-become legal guru has, no doubt, made his marks on different facets of human endeavour.
Asides being a talented craftsman, Chuks is a motivational speaker whose words have given hope to many. As an orator, his breathtaking public speaking prowess is enviable. Chuks is an avid philomath and a young writer, with many unputdownable literary pieces (poems, essays, short stories etc. ) to his credit. Above all, he is a dedicated humanitarian, who does all within his reach to put smiles on people’s faces, and to contribute in building sustainable projects for humanity.
His blunt honesty and easy-going disposition attract many to him. With his kind of person who thinks blindness as a detour, not a dead-end-street; I cannot agree less with Helen Keller that “the only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”
